Donna lives and works full time as an artist in Calgary. She most often works in oils using loose brushstrokes to simplify and suggest details.
She participates in several workshops a year and has been taught by well known local artists Doug Swinton, Jean Pedersen, as well as American Master Painters Kim English, Daniel Gerhartz, Scott Burdick, Carolyn Anderson and Sherrie McGraw.
She also teaches at the Calgary School of Art and is represented by Swirl Fine Art
When I began the journey of becoming an artist I discovered unexpectedly that painting provided relief from almost daily migraines that I have had for over thirty years. I really believe that being an artist is what I was always meant to be and I feel blessed to be following my dream.
My paintings are done in oil with loose brushstrokes simplifying and only suggesting details using a wet into wet (alla prima) technique. Figures are my favorite subject matter and I love to capture a moment in time, of people going about the daily lives. Although my work is representational, I don't want to tell the whole story of the people in my paintings. My impressionistic style is meant to draw the viewer into the painting as a participant.
As a way of "paying it forward" I contribute 10% from the sale of my paintings to KIVA an organization that provides loans to people in third world countries to start or expand a business. I think it is a wonderful way to feel like I'm making a real difference in someone's life!
