Dwight Rose is a graduate of the Ringling College of Art and Design earning a BFA degree in painting went on to teach both in Ringling’s degree and community art programs and VCU School of the Arts in Qatar.
Over his 30-year career rose has won numerous awards and his work has been in many collections. These collections comprises many corporations such as Exxon-Mobile, Qatar Petroleum, Qatar National Bank, Qatar General Tourism Authority, Petroleum Technology Co., Doha Qatar, Suntrust Bank Florida, University of North Carolina Greensboro, Shelton Group of Companies (Charlotte NC), Sarasota YMCA, Peoples Employment Exchange (Sarasota FL), Sarasota Wellness Center, Kybele Hotel, (Istanbul Turkey), Wake Forest University.
Personal collectors such as the first lady of Qatar, Her Highness Sheika Mozah Bint Nasser AL Misnad, and the Associate Dean of Cornell University Medical College to name a few. Rose has participated in many groups and one man shows. In 2009 - 2010 Roses work was featured at various galleries and museums across the state of South Carolina. Such locations included the Florence Museum of Art Science and History, Lynda English Gallery, Florence Regional Arts Alliance, Florence Little Theatre, Francis Marion University, Black Creek Arts Center, Chameleon Art Gallery, Birds of a Feather, and Feury Fine Arts.
The Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg in SC exhibited “Portraits of the World,” a collection of watercolors by Dwight Rose, from November 1st to the 30th 2010 at the Guild Gallery in the Chapman Cultural Center.
For the 2010 season there was another successful inclusion of Roses work in the Guild’s show. This was held at the Carolina Gallery in Spartanburg South Carolina.
Two of Roses works were featured in the Artist Guild of Spartanburg juried member show of 2009 at the Spartanburg Art Museum.
Artistsphere 2010 invitational remains a successful venue for Roses work where the piece titled "Deserted Picnic" was selected for their spring show festival.
In 2009 Rose participated in two juried shows. They were the Greenville SC Spring invitational called "Artistphere" and the 32nd Annual show of the South Carolina Water Media Society. Rose's piece titled "Santorini" was included in the traveling show of the SCWS, which was limited to 30 award winning works. He also had a one-man show in the summer of 2007 in Monson Massachusetts NE. This show featured images of the Middle East where some of these images were earlier depicted in a self-published book, which was printed in the summer of 2006.
Rose has traveled internationally and painted scenes from Jamaica, USA, India, Thailand, Russia, China, Qatar, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Morocco, Italy, and Greece. He currently resides and works with his wife Ruth Beals in Spartanburg South Carolina where he conducts workshops, exhibits and teaches watercolor painting at the Art School in the Chapman Cultural Center.
My paintings start with a color idea, and then evolve into compositions in which color remains the primary subject. To me, art is a synthesis of personal feelings, the subject or colors that inspire, along with the materials and techniques available. My paintings are an exploration of these collective tools, which I believe are the basis of the artistic expression.
Serenity and simplicity are my primary goals. Being a painter and illustrator I feel my duty is to convey the beauty of the moment and add focus to the essence of that beauty.
My works are based on the principles of good graphics, which comprises the use of line, and the modeling of light and experimentation with color. A drawing is done where the line provides the foundation for the subject. Through experimentation with color shifts I can create contrasts. I also observe the transient nature of light and other elements that qualifies a landscape architecture or still life. I am interested in large areas or intimate spaces, incorporating the entourage of people and objects and surface textures defined by pattern formations.
I use wet in wet watercolor washes, which usually sets the style for my work, a continuous layering of pigment creating translucent glazes of paint often applied in parts intuitively. Textures are created using a variety of techniques and tools. Also creating depth through contrast, which in turn gives the paintings weight and substance.
Working towards a style that combines traditional painting techniques along with inherent personal characteristics, is the impetus behind my current body of work. Experiences are the root of my inspirations. This generally comes from my travels and exposure to world cultures. Perhaps this accounts for why my work seeks out subjects that sometimes resist change and/or embraces it. Despite the diametric of this process, my subjects inherently become snapshots usually referencing that moment or significant passage of time.
