Because I enjoy the sculptural nature of masking tape, I can formulate
fluid “lines” that I wouldn’t be able to do with the conventional pen,
pencil etc. By alternating the taped layers with painted acrylic
layers–sometimes up to eight. A dialogue has been created among the
rhythm of the tape lines and color layers which I further enhance with
sanding, etching, and scraping giving the piece added movement, with
each painting having a conversation within itself. I’ve always
responded to Brice Mardens’ flowing lines and James Nares rhythmic
pattern of brush strokes and Frank Stellas’ color fields has
influenced and inspired my work.
