Hidden Colour is a series of paintings based on impressions of figures as seen in the darkness and emerging from shadows. Each painting depicts aspects of two figures lying together against a represented background of the sky. Mediating between the opposing values of abstraction and representation is an underlying theme of the paintings. The figures are cropped by the canvas and represent both abstract forms and figurative narratives directed by the elements in the composition.
My paintings explore the internal dialogues that people maintain to achieve balance. The images identify a time and space during restfulness when a person naturally meditates on subjects of health, mortality and relationships. I identify figurative painting with these meditations and attempt to link them through my work. I crop the figures and abstract the form in order to limit an association with the individuals represented in the paintings. It is intended that this will lead the viewer to identify themselves with the human forms in the paintings as opposed to trying to identify who they are.
Hidden Colour signals that an ambiguous space exists for everybody, between wakefulness and sleep or between the material and the psychological. Through figuration and abstraction, it is the intention of the paintings to outline this space and create a unique opportunity for further investigation.
From its earliest point Patrick's work has portrayed the human figure. Without props and outside of a narrative, the figure retains little indication of social class or historical context. This metaphor is employed in the context of imagery where values for the human form can be identified and explored.
